Digital Binders for SPED: Supporting Student-to-Adult Transitions with LiveBinders
By Tina Schneider

As part of our ongoing series on how students are using LiveBinders, we’re checking out how high schoolers get the materials they need to step into adult life after graduation. We are featuring Lisa Washington’s Transition Portfolio binder—built to help these students (and their support teams) get ready for life beyond high school.
This binder provides access to everything from academic plans to personal documents, career goals, and life skills. What makes this binder especially impactful is how it helps students understand the real-life shift that happens when they turn 18—when parents no longer automatically have access to their school, health, or financial records.
This can be overwhelming for any teen, but for students with special needs, that transition can come with even more complexity.
As Lisa shared in our podcast conversation:
It’s not just about getting a diploma—it’s about preparing them to advocate for themselves and understand what adulthood really means. The binder gives them a place to collect all those ‘adulting’ pieces and practice being in charge of their own life.
Counselors and educators may also find this binder helpful as a template for organizing resources for their own students.
If you’re a counselor or transition specialist looking for ways to better support students, check out the quick video below for a walkthrough of the Transition Portfolio binder.
