My name is Sarah Parcells, formerly Zuellig when I began this program and I have been a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist in an elementary school setting for six years. I am working towards a Masters in Special Education in Applied Behavior Analysis
because I am interested in viewing the relationship between communication and behavior through a different lens.
My educational philosophy is that every child should have access to a learning environment that is maintained through the use of reinforcement, repetition, and motivation. My goal as a practicing speech-language pathologist is to help my students become engaged and effective communicators. Because language and behavior do not occur in a vacuum, I am interested in environmental factors that have a direct impact on learner behavior, such as teaching materials, instructional strategies, and teacher-student communication.
It is critical that the programming we create has an immediate impact on the student or acts as a springboard for future skill acquisition, resulting in greater independence and the ability to participate more fully in the larger community. In my opinion, teacher consistency is critical for student success in the classroom. As educators, we must model positive reinforcement when students exhibit appropriate classroom behavior and use corrective reinforcement when students' classroom behavior is less than expected. In order to foster strong student motivation, my teaching strategies include a plethora of well-planned opportunities for reinforcement. My goal is to use my behavior modification experience to influence both the learning environment and how my students respond to it.
