Culturally responsive-sustaining education is grounded in a cultural view of learning and human development in which multiple expressions of diversity (e.g., race, social class, gender, language, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, disability) are recognized and regarded as assets for learning. Culturally responsive-sustaining education shifts from a focus on historical conditions of inequality to ideas that shape access, participation and outcomes of learners. A successful integration strategy requires an understanding and implementation of culturally responsive-sustaining practices. These practices must be combined with enrollment policies designed to achieve integration and diverse schools and classrooms, which are outlined in accompanying binders entitled “School Enrollment/Classroom Placement" and "Enrollment Examples".
