Teach Responsibility, Empower Learners, & Keep Parents Involved
Abstract: What do interactive notebooks, flipped videos, downloadable lessons, online "redo" assignments", Power School, weekly emails, and up front parent phone calls do for your classroom? They empower learners, teach responsibility, model organizational skills, and free up teacher time so that you can focus on what is most important, the STUDENT! Description: The Explorer Team at Granite Falls Middle School work hard to eliminate curricular boundaries, reach students, differentiate instruction, and lead students down the path of self empowerment. Each week, a detailed email is sent to parents and students to inform them of the plans for the week. Lessons plans intentionally cross between all subject areas. Lessons are flipped, integrated, uploaded so they can be accessed 24 x 7, and designed with the student in mind. Each classroom has its own flavor, but all meet the needs of students. Come and see how excellence is reached by 7th graders in Caldwell County. Techniques to be discussed, Interactive Notebooks, Flipped Classroom, Interdisciplinary Units, Blogs, Teacher Websites, and a full integration across the classroom walls. Session Objectives: Teachers will learn how to create a classroom that uses 21st century skills, differentiates instruction, and facilitates learning. Teachers will reflect on their current practice in the classroom and take steps towards a fresh approach to meet the needs of students. Teachers will deconstruct how one team meets the needs of students and plan steps to integrate old ideas used in a new way in their own classroom.
