2nd Grade Unit on Character Traits
I designed this unit based on my field experience in a second grade classroom in which students were studying character traits. I chose to focus my curriculum unit on the six pillars of character which include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. I used competency goal 1, the learner will identify and exhibit qualities of responsible citizenship in the classroom, school, and other social environments, objective 1.04, identify responsible courses of action in given situations and assess the consequences of irresponsible behavior. My resource file includes ten different activities that address each of the six character traits. There are a variety of activities including books, games, movies and web-tools that can be used to assess students’ learning. My summative assessment gives small groups of students the opportunity to role play in order to convey a “secret” character trait to the rest of the class. Students are asked to guess the character traits their classmates act out after all the groups have presented their skits.
