Tab 1 -- What is sculpture?
What is a Sculpture?
A sculpture is the act and art of making three-dimensional works of art.

An artist can use many different kinds of materials to create a sculpture.

Many sculptures are actually made about people.  These are called portraits.

A portrait is a representation of a person showing the head, neck, and shoulders.

Most sculptures are either decorative or utilitarian.

Decorative sculpture is a sculpture made with the purpose of looking at and nothing else.

Utilitarian Sculpture is a sculpture that is made for a specific purpose, like a bowl or jug.

Tab 2 -- Moche Portrait Vessels

Moche Portrait Vessels

Between about 200BC and AD700 a militaristic society flourished on the
northern Peruvian coast. Formerly named after its language, Mochica, this
civilization is now referred to by the name of its major ceremonial
administrative site, Moche.

The Moche people were extremely proficient potters.  Pottery is a type of ceramic made from clay and fired at high temperatures to create a strong and hard bowl, pot, or other type of vessel to hold things.

To the Moche people, water was their most important resource.  Moche sculptors would create what are called effigy vessels so they could carry around their water.  These vessels were often portraits of people, animals, or gods.

Calder's Wire Portraits
When Alexander was a boy, he used to make toys out of wires and other objects he had found.  This turned out to be one of Alexander Calder's favorite mediums to use throughout his life as he created portraits of friends out of wires.

Some of Calder's most famous works were kinetic sculptures.

A kinetic sculpture is a sculpture that moves
