Subtab 0 -- Declaration of Independence
Reading the Declaration of Independence
  • Today, you are going to read the Declaration of Independence for yourself!
FIRST, open the link to the left.

ON YOUR OWN PAPER, answer the questions that follow.  Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

1.  Read the FIRST PARAGRAPH.  It explains WHY the Congress has written the Declaration.  Write ONE SENTENCE of your own that tells why they wrote the Declaration.

2.  Read the SECOND PARAGRAPH.  It explains why the Congress felt that they had no choice but to break away from England.  QUOTE the most famous sentence from this section.

3.  The rest of the Declaration gives SPECIFIC THINGS that King George had done that the Congress had problems with.  Pick what you think are the MOST IMPORTANT THREE and copy them on your paper.

4.  Now pick what you think are the LEAST IMPORTANT THREE and write them on your paper.

5.  Finally, look at the signatures at the end of the Declaration.  Write all of the names that you recognize or that you have heard of before.
