Tab 0 -- Buying Carpet
Quality Carpets
I'm in the middle of renovating our home and am looking to buy carpet for our bedrooms.

After hearing pitches from several different carpet salesmen, I realized that there are many different areas to look for in carpet quality.  You should understand how carpets are made and what types of quality issues to look for in each phase of a carpets construction.

The key things to check for are listed below:

  1. fiber - natural, nylon or acrylic
  2. backing - there are actually two backings on carpet
    1. the primary backing is what the fibers are woven around
    2. the secondary backing is applied with a latex substand to the primary backing and is what is visible when you inspect carpets
  3. density - how close is the fiber woven together - higher density is the best for longer wear and tear
I've learned that the backing can be just as bad for a carpet as the density and fiber quality.

Be sure to check out my collection of sites on the sub-tabs above to find out what to look for in good and bad quality carpets and backing

Tab 1 -- Buying Rugs
What to look for in rugs
  • Persian rugs are the best for their density and quality of knots
  • Look for a high number of knots per square inch or CM
  • Persian rugs have two knots
  • The older the better - rare
  • Watch out for bleach treated rugs which are applied to carpets to make them look older
