Tab 0 -- The Information Maze
What do we do with all this information?
Our society has been irreversibly affected by a new phenomenon in InfoWhelm - an unparalleled access to a wealth of online information, never before seen or heard of.

Learning has truly become a lifelong pursuit, and it can happen anytime and anywhere in our Information age. But how do we determine good from the bad, interpret right from wrong, and distinguish complete, accurate, and usable data from a sea of irrelevance and digital inundation?

The skills to help us best understand and make use of the wealth of knowledge at our fingertips is essential to life and success both in the classrooms and workforces of the 21st century

Pick the best search engine

What is the most effective way of searching the Internet? Not one search engine covers more than 30% of the entire Web, so often you have to use more that just one search engine to find what you are looking for.

Tab 3 -- Search Engines with a Twist
Effective Discovery of Information

With technology and search tools we can take our search for information  online.

Work together, and share, using collaborative tools to harvest or harness quality information, rather than the first bit of information that Google throws up.

Tab 4 -- Google-ification
Google is not synonymous with Search.

As a company, Google focuses on three key areas: Search, Ads and Apps. Search is their core technology; ads are their central business proposition; and apps are the umbrella over the web-based software that you can access anywhere, any time. While each of these has a lot of technology under the hood, the basic tenets for Search, Ads and Apps are very simple according to Google.

Understand Google - but remember that Google is NOT all there is!!

"Cloud computing" is the phrase for web-based software for business or personal use which requires no hardware or software. It's easy to collaborate and share your work no matter where you are or which computer you're using.

Google provides many shortcuts - which is why Google is used by just about everyone, every day.

For quick pieces of information, there is no need to go anyplace else other than your favourite search - regardles if it is Bing, Google, or something else.

Tab 6 -- News Readers and RSS
Bring it to me!

RSS is a means of subscribing to a webpage, or a blog, or blog comments, or a podcast, or a series of news articles – pretty much anything really – and then every time something on that site changes, a piece of software called a feedreader collects and collates all those changes into one place. You subscribe to whatever you like. It’s a little like designing your very own personal newspaper that contains only the articles that interest you.

RSS allows you to gather information from virtually any source, and the software that delivers it is not your email, but a “feedreader” or “aggregator”.

RSS allows you to subscribe to journals and magazines, newspapers, and all sorts of online resources.

RSS is definitely cool!

Tab 8 -- Getting Ahead
Getting Ahead with Information
Knowing what to pay attention to is a cognitive skill that steers and focuses the technical knowledge of how to find information worth your attention. More and more, knowing where to direct your attention involves a third element, together with your own attentional discipline and use of online power tools - other people. Increasingly, most of the recommendations that make it possible to find fresh and useful signals amid the overwhelming noise of the Internet are social media - online networks that make possible social exchange and relationship. Tuning and feeding our personal learning networks is where the internal and the technological meet the social.
