  Subtab 0 -- Search Tips
Refined Searches in Google

We spend a lot of time searching the Internet. Being as efficient and accurate as possible is critical.

The following tips are intended to be helpful in learning how to search efficiently and effectively.

1.  Do not type full sentences when you are searching - it wastes time. Words that are commonly used, like 'the,' 'a,' and 'for,' are usually ignored (these are called stop words). But there are even exceptions to this exception. The search [ the who ] likely refers to the band; the query [ who ] probably refers to the World Health Organization -- Google will not ignore the word 'the' in the first query.

2. Take it out!  Restrict your search using the minus sign: -  For example: Gettysburg -movie will give you results about the town or battle of Gettysburg but will remove all of the movie references from your search results.  (Important! No space between the - and the word you are removing)

3.  Find the definition.  If in the search box you type: define:   followed by whatever word you are searching, you are taken to a dictionary results page, more reliable than if you merely typed the word you wish to define.

4. Convert it!  Type the word in between measurements you want to have converted and you will immediately have a conversion.  Example: 3 feet in inches

5.  What's the forecast?  Type  weather [and the name of the place you want] and you will get the upcoming forecast below your search box.  Example: weather Fridley  will bring up TG's forecast.

6. A calculator at your fingertips!  Type a calculation into the search box and you will see the answer in the results window.  Use * for multiplication and / for division, to the power of (^), and square root of a number (sqrt).

7.  Find it exactly.  Put "  "  around a specific phrase you are looking for and Google will only return results with those words appearing in that order.  Example:  "Fourth of July" will keep the phrase together whereas Fourth of July will result in pages with fourth and July appearing somewhere on the page, of will probably be ignored completely.

8.  What time is it?  Type Time and then the place you are thinking about and get the quick result.  Example: time Almaty will show what time it is in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

9.  I forgot the word!  The *, or wildcard, is a little-known feature that can be very powerful. If you include * within a query, it tells Google to try to treat the star as a placeholder for any unknown term(s) and then find the best matches. For example, the search  Google *  will give you results about many of Google's products. The query Obama voted * on the * bill will give you stories about different votes on different bills. Note that the * operator works only on whole words, not parts of words.

10.  Find your range!  To find a price range or range of dates, type  whatyouaresearchingfor  date..date  or price..price. For example: iPod $75..150 would result in iPods in that price range.  Be careful to use two .. not three!

11.   Be site-specific!  If you know you need information from a .gov .edu or .net site, tell Google that!  Type site:.gov (or whatever domain you need) at the end of your search and you will receive results from only those sites. This works in the image search too. This is a great way to quickly access public domain information (think .gov).  So, to get information about college from only education sites, type college site:.gov (no space between the colon and the period) and you will have tailored results.

12.  Entertainment and travel!  To find movies in your area, type movie: zipcode  or movie: city name and you will have a quick view of all shows and times in that area. To check flight status of a known flight, enter the airline or airline code with the flight number and see the flight status.  Example: UA 786 would be United Airlines flight 786.

13. Search for reading levels.  Click "Advanced search" and check out the reading levels for each webpage, especially helpful if looking for basic or advanced writing.
